This indicator shows the percentage of families where both the husband and wife are not in the labor force, with children of their own under 18 years of age.
Why is this important?
A lack of entry into the labor force has personal and societal effects. During periods of unemployment, or inability to even enter the labor force to look for jobs, individuals are likely to feel severe economic strain and mental stress. Unemployment is also related to access to health care, as many individuals receive health insurance through their employer. Children with parents who are not in the labor force are likely to feel this strain and lack of financial and health care support and access.
