Binge Drinking Prevalence

Select a Zip Code
This indicator shows the percentage of adult binge drinkers, defined as males having 5 or more drinks on one occasion or females having four or more drinks on one occasion during the past 30 days.

Why is this important?

Binge drinking is a common pattern of excessive alcohol use in the United States. Binge drinking can be dangerous and may result in vomiting, loss of sensory perception, and blackouts. The prevalence of binge drinking among men is twice that of women. In addition, it was found that binge drinkers are 14 times more likely to report alcohol-impaired driving than non-binge drinkers. Alcohol abuse is associated with a variety of negative health and safety outcomes including alcohol-related traffic accidents and other injuries, employment problems, legal difficulties, financial loss, family disputes and other interpersonal problems.
